Megan is Shooting for the Stars...

Hi, my name is Megan. I am 19 years old and am shooting for the stars. At least, I'm going to try my best.
I am a Freshman in Anoka Ramsey College in Minnesota studying communications and broadcast journalism. I am on the Anoka Ramsey College volleyball team and have been the captain on the Junior Olympic high school volleyball and varsity teams and in a leadership group at church. I have been a cheerleader, played on the basketball team and on the yearbook committee.
Some of my other passions are music, volleyball, and volunteering. I also love shopping; it doesn't matter what it's for! I have been in the church choir and have taken voice lessons as well as piano lessons since the second grade.
I was excited to work with former-Governor Tim Pawlenty to have a Minnesota Auditory Processing Awareness Month in October and Minnesota Auditory Processing Awareness Day on April 4th; see my proclamation page for more info. I am also the National spokesperson for the NCAPD website at http://www.ncapd.org/ and was named 2011/2012/2013 Teen Volunteer of the Year from the National Coalition of Auditory Processing Disorders (NCAPD)
I have mentored a 16 year old girl named Aisata who has Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) just like I do. She came to my house every Wednesday and we studied, read and went through computer programs to re-train what her brain hears. Mostly we just talked and I tried to raise her self esteem.
I have babysat two young children who have autism. I feel I am a good person for this job because I have a learning disability and understand communication is very important.
From 2009-2013, I have been in the Miss Teen Minnesota International pageant system. In 2013, my dream finally came true and I became the Miss Teen Minnesota International title holder. In 2012, I was named first runner up in the teen division and in 2011, I was second runner up. I am excited to get the chance to use the sash to get my message of APD Awareness to the teachers, physicians and parents of Minnesota so each child with APD will have early intervention. I want to be the voice for children with this learning disability, because someone needs to speak of for those who can not speak for themselves.
